The first stage in Lalm
Our very first data centre in Norway will be in the village of Lalm in Vågå Municipality, in the very heart of Norway. It will be a test project to build our first local teams, start establishing fiber networks and prepare for larger, coming projects in Scandinavia.
We have chosen Lalm for this initial project as it serves as a great test for three challenges we hope to solve in Norway;
To build a large centre in a safe and slightly secluded area, far away from larger cities but with decent infrastructure for logistics and transportation
Located right next to an abundance of green and renewable hydropower energy, where there is little local usage today, and significant advantages from increasing that usage locally compared to sending it away
Located in a price zone for electricity that is traditionally cheaper than many others, where more funds most be invested in improving fiber infrastructure and attracting engineering talent
These are both challenges and opportunities, and will form an important part of our data strategy. Connected to other centres even further North in Norway, further South and to the West, we believe we will have a strong portfolio to offer superior reliability and latency, at fraction of the cost of traditional data centres.
The first stage of our Lalm development will be ready for commissioning by summer 2023, while the buildings and start of low voltage installation will be already at the end of 2022.
